Nathaniel Dolquist is not just an educator: he is a multifaceted mentor who has dedicated his life to empowering students across the country. As the owner of and head tutor at Kingfisher Prep, Nathaniel combines his extensive experience in tutoring, his passion for the arts, and his deep understanding of student needs to create a unique learning environment that fosters both academic success and personal growth.
After graduating from Yale in 2015, Nathaniel began his tutoring career in New York City, focusing on students ranging from third graders to young adults preparing for college. He has traveled to nearly 60 countries and speaks Spanish, French, and Italian. Nathaniel is a professional actor in film, television, and theater, and has also performed as a ballet dancer and a circus artist. This rich tapestry of experiences allows Nathaniel to connect with students on a personal level, using their interests as a springboard to enhance their academic performance.
“I’ve tutored kids across the country, particularly in NYC and LA, and my approach is always tailored to the individual,” Nathaniel explains. “It’s not just about completing assignments: it’s about mentorship and helping students cultivate the skills they need for long-term success.”
At Kingfisher Prep, Nathaniel and his team prioritize mentorship and genuine connections with students. This approach creates an engaging atmosphere where students feel valued and understood. “I always find a way to connect with kids about what they love, and I use that to guide them in performing better on tests and in school,” he says.
Nathaniel’s sessions go beyond traditional tutoring. He teaches students essential life skills such as writing professional emails, overcoming writer’s block, and developing a resilient mindset. “I want my students to excel academically, but I also want them to have the skills they need to succeed in any profession they choose,” he says. “No matter what they do, I want them to feel prepared, and I hold them to a professional standard of quality.”
Navigating the college application process can be overwhelming, but Nathaniel’s structured approach helps alleviate stress for both students and parents. “We start by mapping out all deadlines and then work backward to create a pacing plan tailored to each student,” he explains. This method allows students to complete their applications well ahead of deadlines, resulting in a more manageable experience.
Nathaniel’s team consists of professionals with lives and careers outside of tutoring, many of whom are working actors or influencers. This connection to the entertainment industry resonates with today’s youth and enhances the relatability of their tutoring sessions.
