If one had asked Stephen Sousa, principal and founder of Sousa Design Architects, about his future when he was studying architecture, he would never have imagined that half of his work would revolve around interiors, let alone that his firm would become the go-to name in hospitality design. Fast forward to 25 years, Sousa Design Architects has firmly cemented itself as a key player in shaping Boston’s vibrant hospitality scene, creating award-winning spaces that combine form, function, and unforgettable atmospheres.
“When I started, I fell in love with the idea of creating spaces that intimately engage all the senses,” Stephen reflects. “The ability to craft an environment where lighting, textures, and flow transform a blank or old space into an extraordinary experience.” Today, his firm is synonymous with Boston’s most celebrated restaurants with hundreds of happy clients.

For Stephen Sousa, design was never just about aesthetics; it was about creating experiences. While studying at the Boston Architectural College, he discovered a fascination with how spaces influence human interaction. For him, architecture isn’t just about buildings. It’s the storytelling that holds power—how every detail evokes a tailored emotion and creates a connection.
This philosophy became the foundation of Sousa Design Architects. Though the firm works in residential and retail projects, hospitality remains Stephen’s personal passion. “In residential design, I create intimate spaces that feel like ‘home.’ Retail, on the other hand, is about designing an intuitive, engaging flow. But in hospitality, I get to combine the two: balancing public and private zones while choreographing the guest’s journey from the moment they walk through the door until they leave, with an indelible memory of the setting they dined in.”
Stephen’s local roots in Boston also shaped his approach. While his work embraces contemporary and modern influences, he makes sure that every project respects the city’s rich architectural history. “Being a Bostonian helped me create honest architecture—one that feels authentic to its local vernacular.”
However, Stephen’s work goes far beyond creating a visually stunning space. His approach combines a meticulous understanding of architecture with an intuitive sense of how spaces should feel. He reimagines lighting that flatters, materials that evoke warmth, and layouts that encourage gathering; details turn a good design into a great experience.
As much as Stephen’s name is tied to its success, he credits his team for turning ideas into reality. “The strength of our team is what allows us to help our clients in the way we do,” he shares. Each person brings in their own perspective and expertise, and that diversity of thought is what makes Sousa Design projects stand out.
For Stephen, success is more than just about earning accolades and awards. He’s deeply committed to giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his career. Whether mentoring young architects or contributing to local projects, this Star Designer sees design as a way to make a positive impact. He believes that architecture should serve the people. He further iterates, “Every project is a new challenge, a new story to tell, but the best part of my job is knowing that our work helps shape the way people experience the world.”
From work with the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Wahlburgers, and Boston’s Michael Scelfo, Sousa Design’s portfolio continues to expand and inspire, showcasing how Stephen Sousa’s impact on the architectural and design landscape is undeniable. “The advice I was given early on—to work for yourself—has guided me every step of the way,” he reflects. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to see where it takes us next.”
