The summer crowds fade away when winter weather descends on the East End. That’s when many Hamptons and North Fork restaurants close their doors. However, for those who remain, they’re still a dining scene with plenty of options for cozy meals and seasonal dishes. Whether you’re a resident or visitor seeking comfort food, fresh seafood, or international flavors, these year-round gems have you covered.
The Struggles of Seasonal Dining
Winter poses unique challenges for East End restaurants. Many businesses experience a drastic slowdown, with sales declining by 50 – 75% compared to the busy summer season.
Tora Matsuoka, the co-founder of Tip Top Hospitality, explains: “The problem is when you’re operating a business, there is a floor to your expenses… rent, insurance, labor, utilities… your sales drop below your break-even point and you begin to hemorrhage money.”
For some, closing during winter is the only option to manage costs. However, shutting down can create other issues. Restaurants risk losing their customer base.
Additionally, their employees may seek permanent positions elsewhere.
“So even though you’re going into the peak season and you’re going to be making money, you’ve now spent all this money to attract new people to train them up,” says Matsuoka. Tip Top Hospitality chooses to stay open year-round despite the challenges. “I’m basically working for free or worse… but it’s the right thing to do for the community… and ultimately it’s proven to be the right thing for our business.”
