Science, history, and inspiration converge as Hamptons Observatory partners with Southampton Arts Center to host a free lecture by Dava Sobel. The acclaimed author and Pulitzer Prize finalist will discuss her latest book, The Elements of Marie Curie: How the Glow of Radium Lit a Path for Women in Science. The work sheds light on Marie Curie’s groundbreaking life and legacy. The event will occur on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 6:00 PM ET.
Honoring the Legacy of Marie Curie
Curie’s discoveries in radioactivity reshaped modern science. They also earned her two Nobel Prizes and her legacy as one of history’s most influential figures. Curie’s pioneering work on polonium and radium introduced the term “radioactivity.” More importantly, it opened new doors for women in science.
Between 1906 and 1933, Curie mentored more than 40 aspiring female scientists in her laboratory. She also drove mobile X-ray units to World War I battlefield sites, where she trained 150 women as X-ray technicians.
Sobel’s book explores these monumental achievements—all while celebrating Curie’s enduring role as a role model for women in STEM fields. “Even 90 years after her death, Marie Curie inspires scientists and young women across generations,” said Donna L. McCormick, Executive Director of Hamptons Observatory.
Dava Sobel: A Voice for Science and History
A New York Times best-selling author and Pulitzer finalist, Sobel has earned acclaim for her works Longitude, Galileo’s Daughter, and The Glass Universe. Her gift for weaving science and narrative has made her a literary force—even earning her a place as Poetry Editor for Scientific American.
Sobel’s lecture will focus on Curie’s visits to the United States in the 1920s. While in the U.S., she met American presidents and earned praise as a war hero and Nobel laureate. Sobel believes Curie would have felt right at home at the Hamptons Observatory: “Had the Hamptons Observatory or the Southampton Arts Center existed at the time, I feel certain she would have enjoyed a side trip to see them.’”
Sobel brings historical figures like Curie to life by combining meticulous research with compelling storytelling. “Marie Curie received extraordinary recognition in her time, but her contributions remain timeless,” Sobel notes.
An Evening of Learning and Stargazing
Following Sobel’s lecture, attendees can purchase signed copies of The Elements of Marie Curie. Weather permitting, the event will conclude with guided telescope tours of the night sky. Hamptons Observatory founding Board member Sean Tvelia will lead this portion of the event.
Tvelia is the Academic Chair of Science at Suffolk County Community College. He will guide participants in observing celestial wonders. The goal? To connect Curie’s groundbreaking work to the larger cosmos.

Founded in 2005, Hamptons Observatory remains a cornerstone of science education in the East End community. The nonprofit organization offers free lectures, star parties, and planetarium shows to foster public interest in astronomy and related sciences.
